PLAN YOUR CONTENT IN ADVANCE

Plan your content in advance so you won’t have to stress the day of the post. It may be helpful for you to prepare a document that includes the copywriting and a description of the image or video that you’ll use. If you are using hashtags, it may be useful to research and choose those before sitting down to make your post as well.

When selecting photos and videos, be sure to choose high-quality clips or photos that are well-lit and nicely cropped. Give some thought to the photo’s composition to make sure it will look nice on your social media channels. If you are using video clips, you’ll want to make sure the video is nicely edited. There are some free apps out there that are useful and user-friendly when editing video. You can try CapCut, which is a tool we love, or you can use the social media platform’s in-app editing tools.

For editing photos, you can use an app like Hypic, or you can use the platform’s in-app editing tools there, as well.

When writing copy for your captions, make sure you use concise, easy-to-understand language. Most often you’ll also want to include a clear call-to-action at the end of each post. That can be as simple as saying “Give us a call today!” or “Stop by and see us before we close at 8PM.”

Read your captions out loud to make sure they make sense and fit your brand’s tone and attitude.

SCHEDULE YOUR CONTENT

Facebook and Instagram make it easy to schedule content for your small business. You can use Meta Business Suite to schedule your content for months in advance. You also have the option to go back and edit posts from your phone if you notice something you need to correct. By studying your audience’s algorithm, Meta Business Suite also gives you the option to schedule your content when they predict your audience will be active online.

There are few drawbacks to using Meta Business Suite, such as limited post options but for the most part we find it really easy to use and a helpful tool when scheduling or batching your social media posts.

PROMOTE YOUR PRODUCTS ON SOCIALS

Social Media is a great place to showcase your products, how they work, and how they can be used.

Take high-quality photos and videos of your products in action and post them to social media with a nice caption about which product is shown and what makes it special. You can also use this space to feature a product of the week or month.

PICK YOUR PLATFORMS

Don’t stretch yourself thin trying to promote your brand on all of the platforms out there. It may be helpful for you to choose just one or two.

We believe that Facebook is a great place for small businesses. Facebook has many great features for your business page, including the option to include hours of operation, a link to your website, in-app messaging, and so much more.

Instagram doesn’t seem to get quite the engagement that Facebook receives for business posts, but don’t get discouraged. Just because viewers aren’t engaging with the content, doesn’t mean they aren’t viewing and seeing the content, boosting brand awareness.

If you want to try your hand at truly engaging your audience on Instagram, you’ll have to get ultra-creative. Make sure you can commit to a regular posting schedule and are committed to trying different things to create visually stunning and engaging content. Video trends and infographics work best on this site. One thing to keep in mind is that Instagram users are a younger demographic, so it’s important to know your target audience and demographic. If your target audience is mostly Boomers, you may want to focus most of your attention on Facebook.

STICK TO A ROUTINE

Creating content for social media can be time consuming. It’s not unheard of to spend several hours on just one post. It may be helpful for you to stick to a routine when creating and scheduling content for social media.

Choose one day a week to focus your attention on creating and scheduling your content for the week or weeks ahead if you find this easier.

You’ll also want to have a goal in mind for how often each week and at what frequency you’d like to post. Keep your goal realistic and remember, you can adjust your goal as needed.

HAVE FUN AND BE YOURSELF

Remember to put your personality and the character of your brand or business into each social media post. Be honest with your audience about who you are and show your audience that you’re a real person. Authenticity rules on social media.

Also, try to find something about social media that you enjoy, whether that be engaging with your audience in the comments, or commenting on others’ posts for a few minutes after you schedule your own posts.
